Chittrovanu Mazumdar

Born in Paris in 1956, Mazumdar grew up in Calcutta. In 1981, he graduated at the top of his class from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta. Since his first solo exhibition in 1985, he has established himself as one of India's leading contemporary artists.Invited to display at the Victoria Memorial Durbar Hall in Calcutta in 1991, he joined the ranks of the previous two invitees M F Husain and Bikash Bhattacharjee.Mazumdar considers himself an expressionist painter. His paintings - using bold brushstrokes, layered imagery, abstract images and elements of collage - express the conflicting experiences and beliefs that exist within modern society and man. The artist went on to study painting and printmaking at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1983. While in Paris, he would spend his time walking around the different museums and art galleries and in the local libraries, studying French impressionist painters.
